Manhole Frame repair

The Problem:

Due to heavy traffic or because of past mistakes in construction and the use of incorrect materials, manhole covers can collapse, causing serious problems. In this way they become a source of danger to traffic.

Your Solution:

HERMES TECHNOLOGIE has developed an easily applied system which includes special materials and equipment for an efficient, rapid and durable repair.

Up until 25 years ago, technical knowledge in Germany was such that installing manhole frames, or regulating frames which had dropped, slipped or tilted, meant bedding them on a layer of concrete. This manual technique was very expensive; and the 3-day curing time for the mortar was extremely inconvenient. It regularly led to diversions or bottlenecks which impeded traffic flow.
There has always been a need for manhole frame regulation because of chemical processes (road salt), and the steadily increasing volume of traffic, especially of heavy goods vehicles.

ERGELIT grout for manhole frame regulation

10 reasons to use ERGELIT grout superfix

10 reasons to use ERGELIT grout superfix

ERGELIT superfix grout was invented and introduced in 1981. This mortar guaranteed easy handling, and could be used in a wide variety of fluctuations in temperature and atmospheric humidity.

  1. easy mixing of the mortar, by hand or agitato
  2. easy to measure the water needed: mistakes when mixing are almost impossible
  3. excellent flowability – easy to pour from container
  4. working on one’s hands and knees is unnecessary
  5. flows efficiently into all cavities under the manhole frame.
  6. successful underpinning of the manhole framework 100% guaranteed
  7. the only fibre-reinforced grout which is fully traffic-loadable after 30 minutes
  8. outstanding resistance to cracking and improved performance at the manhole frame edge, even under heavy dynamic loading
  9. workable down to –15° C
  10. the only grouting mortar system for which a quality assurance schedule is availableMake your choice! For manhole frame regulation it must be ERGELIT grout superfix 35 F.

Edge work: materials

The full ‘manhole frame regulation’ process requires a range of further materials. We should mention here VBT damping rings, commonly known as ‘anti-rattle rings’. A noteworthy new development in this area has been ‘anti-rattle filler’. This malleable compound of two environmentally neutral synthetic components is inserted into the manhole cover support or into the frame itself in the form of a bead of self-hardening paste, as a damping layer. This compound is a versatile, high quality alternative to sound-damping, and is quite unaffected by the diameter or size of the manhole frame. Special materials also exist for repairing crumbling or cracked edges around the frame. For this work -depending on the extent of the loss of surface material – there are bituminous tape, masking tape and shaft sealing strips. Supplementary products MSK liquid asphalt or MSK “cold” Rephalt have proved themselves in the repair of damage to asphalt edges. In their physical properties they are in every way equal to the surrounding hot asphalt.

Instruction & Guidlines

Manhole frame regulation

Manhole frame regulation

  1. Easy to use, with guaranteed durability
  2. Use lifting apparatus to raise frame to the required road-surface level
  3. Clean out old mortar from gap produced
  4. Insert hose shuttering to give perfect seal between lower edge of frame and upper edge of manhole outer ring or the throat of the manhole shaft where repositioning frame, where frame sits directly on the shaft, where the throat of the manhole shaft is breaking up, where shafts are constructed of clinker-brick, where the frame has dropped seriously
  5. Use ERGELIT plugging mortar or shaft construction mortar
  6. Partly inflate hose shuttering– max. pressure 0.3 bar
  7. Carefully insert supply hose between shuttering and frame
  8. Check that whole area to be grouted is sealed off, taking special care with lower edge, since mortar can leak downwards through the slightest gap – hose shuttering sits tight against the inner frameMix up ERGELIT dry mortar grout superfix 35F (see mixing table)
  9. Pour 2/3 of required water into mixing container
  10. Run agitator at approx 600 rpm
  11. Add mortar while continuing to stir – Add rest of water – stir for 1 minute until smooth
  12. Pour mortar through supply tube – Remove supply tube
  13. Allow 5 minutes to harden at 20° C ambient temperature
  14. Where there are cracks in the surrounding asphalt, produce a smooth surface with jointing tape or MSK liquid asphalt
  15. Open valve, let some air out, withdraw hose shuttering
  16. Remove any excess mortar
  17. Wash hose shuttering – replace manhole cover
  18. Where flanged frame is set in paving stones, bed paving stones back in again with ERGELIT paving mortar
  19. Grout paving stones with ERGELIT grout superfix 35F and 3 cm of MSK cold bitumen.
  20. Traffic flows again
